Certification and Disclosure Rules for Lab-Grown Gems in 2026: A Compliance Checklist for Brands
Selling lab-grown gems is easy to start and easy to get wrong. Disclosure failures create returns, platform suspensions and regulatory exposure. Here is the 2026 landscape, organized as a working checklist.
1. The Foundation Rule: Unambiguous Disclosure
The baseline comes from US guidance summarized by GIA: laboratory-manufactured gem materials must be described in a way that leaves no doubt they were not produced by nature, at every point of sale from manufacturer to consumer. Failing to disclose origin across the sales chain is considered a deceptive practice. In practical terms: every product page, tag, invoice and verbal script must use “laboratory-grown,” “lab-grown,” “lab-created” or “synthetic” immediately adjacent to the gem name.
2. Certificate Thresholds on Major Platforms
Marketplace rules have hardened. On major US marketplaces such as Amazon, published listing policies require, among other points: explicit “Lab-Grown/Lab-Created/Synthetic” labeling immediately before the word “diamond,” and original grading reports from recognized laboratories (GIA, IGI, AGS or GCAL) for white lab-grown diamond jewelry above defined thresholds (earrings over 1.0 ct total; ring or pendant center stones of 0.75 ct and above). Always verify the current platform policy text before listing — thresholds get updated.
3. EU Import: Due Diligence in Writing
From 2026, trade guidance for the EU/Antwerp route indicates that finished diamond goods of 0.50 ct and above entering the EU customs territory require a signed due-diligence declaration on origin, with records retained for five years; rough goods travel with Kimberley Process documentation. Brands sourcing finished jewelry through EU entry points should confirm their importer’s documentation chain.
4. Market-Specific Language Rules
New local rules keep appearing. Trade guidance for the Russian market effective September 2026 indicates the word “diamond” is restricted in product labeling (use “diamond material”-class terminology), 4C grade promotion is prohibited, and weight must be shown in grams rather than carats. If you sell there, localize copy before you ship.
5. What Your Supplier Should Hand You
• Growth-method statement per SKU (HPHT/CVD/flux/hydrothermal)
• Certificates matched one-to-one with stones
• Post-growth treatment disclosure where applicable
• Packing lists that repeat the material name per line item
The One-Line Template for Product Pages
