From Sketch to Showcase: How OEM/ODM Custom Jewelry Manufacturing Works with a Lab-Gem Factory

“Custom” means different things in different factories. This guide defines exactly what OEM and ODM manufacturing looks like when lab-grown diamonds and colored gemstones are involved — and what you should require at every step.

OEM vs ODM, Precisely

• OEM: you own the design; the factory manufactures to your drawings. You supply sketches, CAD files or reference images.

• ODM: the factory provides design capability; you select and modify from the factory’s design library or ask its designers to develop from your brief.

Choose OEM when design IP is core to your brand; choose ODM when speed and design cost matter more than exclusivity.

The Production Pipeline

1. Brief and quotation. You send sketches, photos or CAD; the factory returns a quotation with metal weight estimates, stone specifications and unit price ranges. Typical turnaround: 【X】business days.

2. CAD modeling. Designers convert the brief into 3D CAD; you review renders and approve or revise. State the number of included revisions in your agreement — ours includes 【X】rounds.

3. Silver prototype. A wax and silver version for fit, proportion and stone layout check. This is your last cheap chance to change design decisions.

4. Gold master. The approved design in gold with lab stones set; you approve the final product standard.

5. Bulk production. Casting, setting, polishing and QC to the approved master. Lead time: 【X】–【X】days depending on quantity.

Metal Options and Matching

Factories work across 10K/14K/18K gold, platinum and 925 silver. Match metal to line positioning: 925 silver for fashion entry lines with lab melee; 14K for volume bridal; 18K and platinum for premium color-gemstone designs. Confirm plating specifications (rhodium, vermeil thickness) in writing for silver goods.

Design Protection

Before sharing unreleased designs, sign an NDA and verify the factory’s design-control practices: numbered molds, file access limits, and a written exclusive-manufacturing clause stating the design will not be produced for third parties. A factory that volunteers these terms without prompting is signaling professional discipline.

First-Order Timeline, in One Line

Day 0 brief → Day 【X】 CAD → Day 【X】 silver prototype → Day 【X】 gold master → Day 【X】 bulk delivery. Ask every candidate supplier to commit to dates, not adjectives.
